Summer Program

We now offer a wide range of services, including tutoring, accommodation plans, meeting with school personnel, and evaluation and screeners.  At the core of what we do, Illuminations is still the only private dyslexia therapy provider in East Mississippi and West Alabama.  Now we also offer online therapy through Lexercise for families who cannot get to one of our centers in person.

The individualized therapy experience is designed to remediate core deficits in language, reading, spelling, and writing. For students who graduate from our therapy program, instructional support on grade level skills may still be necessary.  Therapy sessions are with 2-3 students at a time for a minimum of 3 days per week for best results.

Summer Program

Research shows the average student can lose 2 months of reading and 2½ months of math skills during the summer break.  Students with dyslexia can lose much more.  Our summer program has shown a reading improvement rate of one grade level from May to August on standardized assessments done at independent school sites for 90% of our students.

iReady May 2019:

Grade 1/2 : 481

Summer therapy- 30 sessions

iReady August 2019

Grade 3 : 529

What is Dyslexia Therapy?

Your child may be receiving remediation at school.  Under the Every Student Succeeds Act, all students not making progress should receive "tier" interventions.  As a parent of a child with dyslexia, look for instruction that is:

Very frequent for sufficient time.

All skills for reading, spelling, and writing are explained, directly taught, and modeled. Children are discouraged from guessing at words.

Systematic and cumulative

The concepts follow a logical, sequential order, from simple to more complex; each new concept builds upon previously introduced concepts, with built in review to aid memory and retrieval.

Step-by-step procedures for introducing, reviewing, and practicing concepts.

To link listening, speaking, reading, and writing together; we involve movement and “hands-on” learning.

What is Dyslexia Therapy?

The National Institute of Mental Health reports that 95% of children can achieve grade-level grading success with specialized help early.  The core of Illuminations methodology evolves from the Orton-Gillingham based methods: a scientific, universally-successful, specific teaching approach that combines auditory, visual, and kinesthetic learning modalities.

We also can do this all online for our families that are out of our service area.  We are a Lexercise Certified Structured Literacy Provider.
